Artist Statement
I am a painter who uses imagery influenced by my rural Midwest upbringing and the theater of domestic life. My paintings use figuration, a high key color palette, and paints fluid tactility. My work explores ideas surrounding belonging, transformation, and illness including neuropsychological care. I develop my work from my lived experiences, interpersonal relationships, and through observations of American culture. Personal iconography is enmeshed with scenarios that occupy dream space, contemporary life, and direct depictions of my childhood home. My diaristic writing and drawing practice creates a catalogue of reserve immediate images for the development of more complex compositions. My painting practice has evolved in tandem with healing from complex adolescent trauma and is a subject referenced in the repetition of symbols such as the alligator and personified wood burning stove.
